Priority Area One

Our goal: Meet short-term emergency needs while reducing future demands. To meet this goal, Capital Area United Way awarded $569,948 in funds to 10 programs.

What we fund: Food distribution, emergency assistance with food, shelter, clothing, utilities, rent and mortgage, health clinics and access to prescriptions in emergencies and programs that address underlying causes of emergency assistance.

The impact: Food is given to area food pantries so no one in our community goes hungry, people in short-term crisis can access services 24-hours a day, more people are able to receive services and the need for repeated assistance is reduced.

Funded Programs in Priority Area One:

24-Hour Emergency & Disaster Relief and Preparedness, offered by the Mid-Michigan Chapter, American Red Cross, will receive grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help prevent emergency basic needs from becoming crises and maintaining family stability among families and individuals with disaster or emergency basic needs. Services will utilize the following activities: case management services, coordination of case services among emergency service providers, crisis intervention, comprehensive emergency assistance and referral to services to resolve the underlying causes of need for emergency assistance. Regional Food Distribution Centers, offered by Mid-Michigan Chapter, American Red Cross, is receiving grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help distribute 3.6 million pounds of food to many food pantries/banks throughout the tri-county area. Many people will benefit from the receipt of food, personal care items and over-the-counter medications. Clinton County Cares, offered by Clinton County Family Resource Center, is receiving grant funding through the Capial Area United Way to help provide short-term assistance with basic necessities in emergencies (i.e., food, shelter, clothing, utility assistance, medical or transportation). The program also links clients to other CAUW partner agencies to meet emergency needs and begin addressing the underlying cause of the situation. Community Clinic, offered by Cristo Rey Community Center, is receiving grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help serve individuals in the tri-county with diagnostic, treatment and preventive services. In addition, new patients will be enrolled in the Ingham Health Plan or other governmental program, providing medical assistance to tri-county residents who are unable to pay for services. Direct Assistance, offered by Cristo Rey Community Center, is receiving grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help provide short-term food, clothing and household goods to residents experiencing a crisis. The program also collects and distributes used clothing and household goods to low-income residents, as well as providing food for low-income individuals during an unexpected emergency. Prescription Assistance, offered by Cristo Rey Community Center, is receiving grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help provide prescription and other medicines to low-income residents who are unable to afford the costs. The program provides patients with prescription samples from pharmaceutical representatives, purchased bulk medicines and over-the-counter medications. Emergency Family Services/Personal Identification Program , offered by The Capital Area Salvation Army, is receiving grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help provide support for individuals and families living in poverty with basic necessities such as food, clothing, prescription assistance and many other resources to help individuals in an emergency. SIREN/Eaton Emergency Shelter, offered by SIREN/Eaton Shelter, is receiving grant funding through the Capital Area United Way to help provide emergency shelter, case management, employment referral, basic necessities and household items to homeless individuals and families. The program also helps individuals manage their money and provides mental health and substance abuse counseling. Emergency & Day Shelter, offered by Volunteers of America, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way and will provide short-term emergency services and addressing the underlying causes of homelessness and cyclical homelessness.
