Programs in Area Six

Our goal: Enable adults and senior to maintain their self-sufficiency and independence. To meet this goal, the Capital Area United Way awarded $143,627 in grant funds to 14 programs.

What we fund: Substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, legal assistance, adult day care, respite care and socialization activities.

The impact: Caregivers have time to meet their own needs, seniors are able to stay in their homes and live independently longer and adults and seniors maintain sobriety.

Funded Programs in Area Six:

The Mid-Adult Day Program, offered by Capital Area Center for Independent Living, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way. The program helps prevent institutionalization among mid-life adults with severe disabilities who are otherwise unable to pay for day care. The program provides cognitive stimulation and peer socialization in daily structured activity groups, health and personal need support and professional disability adjustment counseling. Capital Area Interfaith Respite, offered by St. Vincent Catholic Charities, Adult & Senior Safety Net, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way. The program provides respite services in the homes of adults and seniors in need who would otherwise be unable to pay. Trained respite volunteers will visit caregivers and care recipients in their homes on a weekly basis, providing an average of four hours of relief for the caregiver. Adult and Senior Safety, The Clinton County Senior Citizen Drop In Center is receiving grant funding to provide services to seniors in the Clinton County area. The program provides a community focal point on programs and services for older adults. Provides programs with a variety of activities in areas such as education, creative arts, recreation and socialization, advocacy, leadership development, employment, health, nutrition and many other supportive services. Family Counseling Center, offered by St. Vincent Catholic Charities, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way. The program provides activities aimed at improving the personal well-being and mental health of low income adults and seniors. The program enables low-income clients to maintain fulfilling relationships with others, to be productive and contributing members to the community and to have the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity. The Foster Grandparent Program, offered by Catholic Social Services of Lansing/St. Vincent Home, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way. The program provides low income seniors with the opportunity to work one-on-one with at risk children on academic and social skills in a mutually beneficial relationship. The program identifies, recruits, trains, places, supervises and supports volunteers in meaningful activities to decrease or alleviate social isolation related to aging issues and financial resources. Senior Companion Program, offered by St. Vincent Catholic Charities, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way and provides training and subsidized support for seniors over 60 to volunteer in their communities by providing one-on-one companionship to the frail elderly. This program provides needed time out for the caregiver and companionship for the elderly, while providing social activities and a means of emotional and financial support to the senior volunteers. Adult & Senior Counseling, offered by Child & Family Services, Capital Area, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way to provide short-term mental health counseling services to tri-county non-parent adults. The program provides immediate counseling to low income individuals with fees based on the individual's ability to pay. Counseling and Guidance, offered by Cristo Rey Community Center, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way to prevent, manage or resolve emotional problems that effect low income adults' ability to function in the community. The program provides mental health therapy and ensures that mentally handicapped residents receive case management and socialization services. Senior Day Program, offered by Cristo Rey Community Center, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way to provide activities and services designed to promote productive aging in low income seniors. The program provides low-income adults over 60 years of age with a variety of social, recreational and educational activities including, field trips, religious services, and English as a Second Language classes. Substance Abuse Treatment, offered by Cristo Rey Community Center, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way to provide an opportunity for low-income adults to build or maintain stable and healthy living conditions and manage situations that are challenging their sobriety and freedom from drug use. Outpatient treatment is provided in the form of individual therapy, family counseling, aftercare counseling, group therapy, relapse prevention groups and discharge planning. Hospice Care, offered by Eaton Community Hospice, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way. The program provides a comprehensive plan of care to patients with a limited life expectancy so that they may stay at home and with family. Hospice Care provides a variety of services, including respite care, direct patient care, legal services and counseling. Glass House & Holden House Residential Treatment Program, offered by the National Council on Alcoholism/Lansing Regional Area, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way. The residential treatment program provide services for both men and women with needs relating to alcohol and substance abuse. The services help individuals become substance free and, through continuous attendance at support groups and one-to-one support from their sponsor, individuals are given tools to support recovery and provide clients with a stable start. Housing, employment and employment training are in place by time the recipient completes the 90-day treatment program. Adult & Senior Safety Net/Legal Services, offered by Legal Services of South Central Michigan, is receiving grant funding through Capital Area United Way to provide a safety net for low-income adults and seniors who have civil legal problems, and who cannot afford to pay for legal services. This program provides services designed to prevent or resolve legal issues that threaten clients' social stability, housing and income, and help these adults remain independent.
